TOWNSVILLE CITY
Townsville is a charming blend of old and new, with a rich history and surprising cultural depth.
The settlement of Townsville was established in 1864.
The city grew rapidly and during World War II saw the region transformed into a Garrison City as tens of
thousands of American, Australian and other allied service personnel used it as a forward base for the war in the Pacific.
Today the twin cities of Townsville and Thuringowa with a combined population of
150,000 are the heart of North Queensland. They are the focal point of the region, attracting many people to its beautiful climate and relaxed
lifestyle. The cities allow easy access to the attractions of the North while providing all the facilities of a major centre - theatres,
restaurants, quality shopping and nightlife.
Tropical Flinders Mall, a palm-fringed shopping precinct in the city centre, provides a relaxing shopping experience in close proximity to city
hotels and ferry terminals. Many of the shops and stores in Flinders Mall are housed within restored historic buildings, adding charm
to the city heart and creating a unique shopping experience.
On Sundays the city mall is transformed into a colourful mecca of markets, street entertainment and activity
with the renowned "Cotters Markets". This is one the norths' largest market meets and is restricted to selling only
North Queensland arts, crafts, produce and products.
Regular markets can also be found at Bluewater, Ingham, Tully, Mission Beach and
Charters Towers.
