A Heritage City
Brisbane's grand colonial architecture is reflected in the mirror glass of today's modern towers. Visitors can discover the highlights on City Sights Tours, guided walks that reveal the city's history or at your own pace on a Heritage Trail.
Brisbane city's Heritage Trail begins at the imposing City Hall with its grand columns, classical pediment and dramatic clock tower. Tours of City Hall are available. The trail includes the convict built Old Windmill and the beautifully restored Customs House on the riverbank. The grand sandstone building, crowned with a copper dome, is open to the public with a gallery, brasserie and guided tours.
Brisbane's
Old Government House (home to the National Trust) and Parliament House
(which has free guided tours) are some of the magnificent collection
of heritage
buildings along George Street, which also includes the restored Lands
Building and Treasury (now the Conrad International Hotel and Treasury
Casino respectively).
Brisbane Heritage Trail booklets are available on several of Brisbane's oldest suburbs including Hamilton, Windsor, Paddington, Fortitude Valley and New Farm as well as trails of the riverfront.
Brisbane's other outstanding heritage buildings include Newstead House, a grand homestead open to the public.
Some of the Brisbane's fine old churches include St Stephen's Cathedral and Old St Stephen's Church in Elizabeth Street, the tiny All Saints Church in Ann Street and St John's Cathedral (spire pictured left) in Ann Street.
